Mexico: GM spends US$2 billion in Southeast Region

Out of the US$11.2 billion that General Motors purchases every year from suppliers in Mexico, US$2 billion are purchased from 100 suppliers the Company has in Coahuila's Southeast Region, Rafael Laguna Velasco told to Vanguardia.

Mr. Laguna, Supplies and Suppliers Development Director for GM Mexico, said that in spite of the fact that in number they are only 25% of total suppliers, the importance of Saltillo and Ramos Arizpe companies is outstanding because in cost they represent 80% of product.”

Interviewed during the closing of the 6th Small and Medium Companies Forum Productive Chains Encounter,” Mr. Laguna said that GM'S purchases in Mexico have grown almost four times. In spite of volumes, in four years we have increased purchases from US$3.5 billion to US$11.2 billion per year,” he said.

This proves – he said – the importance General Motors gives to suppliers' development. And therefore we do not take the words of the Forum's Coordinator as a challenge, but as a part of a reality in which we are already working.”

Mr. Laguna Velasco said that this is something planned, because many of their first level suppliers are importing parts, and they believe many of these parts can be made here in the Region, and that is why support with a strong team will be given to suppliers development, to reduce imports.
