Changes Affecting the U.S. Visa Application Process in Japan
The U.S. Embassy in Tokyo announced modifications to the U.S. visa application procedures effective March 23, 2012.
The U.S. Embassy is introducing a new process to be followed by all U.S. visa applicants; these include H-1B and L-1 visa applicants as well as individuals applying for other type of visa for entry to the United States.
The new visa processing system will utilize an authorized partner, CGI Stanley, which will perform the following visa services through its separate website (not active yet):
• Collection of MRV fees,
• Scheduling of visa appointments,
• Providing information and general visa inquires, and
• Delivery of passports for approved visa applicants and additional required documents.
The U.S. Embassy is also introducing new options for payment of MRV fees. The new system under the CGI Stanley service will allow for online payments via credit card or Electronic Funds Transfer in addition to the Pay-easy ATM option eliminating the current requirement that fees be paid exclusively within the territory of Japan.
Visa applicants who plan to apply for a U.S. visa before March 23, 2012 should follow the established process as available on the Embassy website found here.
As always, prior to submitting a visa application, please remind the traveler to check with the U.S. consulate regarding documentation requirements for the specific visa type. As the U.S. consulates in Japan are implementing the new application processes, Baker & McKenzie recommends the traveler to stay flexible, and build in extra lead time to accommodate travel itineraries.
