U.S. Customs Announces New Automotive Imports Hub in Detroit

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced on May 10 that it will oversee the creation of a new center in Detroit specifically devoted to managing automotive and aerospace sector imports.

Expected to be completed by the end of 2012, this new Center of Excellence and Expertise (CEE) will cover the full spectrum of commodities within the automotive, aerospace and transportation related industries. CBP began establishing industry-specific CEEs last year in an effort to centralize all trade processing and knowledge in single locations.

These CEEs fall in line with CBP’s focus on “Trade in the 21st Century,” an agency-driven program to further align customs procedures with modern business. Acting Commissioner David Anguilar claimed that CEEs will enhance uniformity across ports of entry, facilitate trade compliance and strengthen knowledge of each industry. In other words, by creating a centralized hub for each industry, CBP hopes to make the entire import process easier for businesses by ensuring fewer cargo delays, eliminating unnecessary paperwork and creating a single point of contact for inquiries. Furthermore, by transitioning the work done with trusted businesses to these centralized hubs, CBP officials at ports of entry can focus primarily on unlawful and high-risk imports.

An overview of the CEE program can be found here.
