Ask a concierge: Business travel tips for London

For 25 years, Nic Lander has been advising hotel guests on what to do and see. Below, the concierge for the Millennium Hotel London offers expert tips for business travelers to the city on the Thames.

Q: What's the most important thing for business travelers to pack when they're heading to your city?
A: A sense of adventure! London is one of the most exciting cities in the world, and there is plenty to see and explore, especially with the summer of sport right around the corner. Go to the London 2012 website to find out the latest on the Olympic Games, scheduled from July 27-Aug. 12.

Q: If business travelers only have a few hours for leisure, what must they see in your city?
A: The one place business travelers must visit during their spare time is the South Bank along the Thames, right in the heart of London. It’s a relatively compact district with ever-changing art exhibitions and concerts, an aquarium, a film museum and, of course, the London Eye, a 135-meter-high observation wheel. There’s something for everyone.

Q: What's the best option for outdoor exercise in your city?
A: Hyde Park, a short walk from the hotel, is ideal for business travelers who would like to have a run as the sun rises or a relaxing evening stroll. The historic park features monuments, gardens and the Serpentine, a recreational lake created in the 1700s.

Q: What is your No. 1 recommendation for a place to hold a business lunch or dinner?
A: Avista, our Italian restaurant, is my No. 1 recommendation for our guests. The restaurant is located at the hotel and offers a mix of rustic and regional Italian cuisine.

Business know-how

Concierge Nic Lander’s top tips for getting business right in London:

Tip 1: In the United Kingdom, there are established rules for everything. The English are very time-oriented and may become anxious about deadlines and results. Punctuality is key. Business travelers should confirm appointments once they arrive in the city, then allow plenty of time to get to them.

Tip 2: Conservative dress is still very important for both men and women — suits are appropriate for most business meetings. While businesswomen are not as limited in colors and styles, men should opt for dark suits of black, blue or gray.

Tip 3: Keep greetings simple. A handshake is the standard greeting for both men and women for business occasions or for visiting a home.
