India Automotive Monthly: Executive Summary (March, 2012)

What Will Be The Role of Datsun In India.

Renault-Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn announced the revival of the iconic Datsun brand on March 20 at a press conference in Jakarta, Indonesia. The Datsun brand will make a comeback in emerging markets Indonesia, India and Russia with the first vehicles being rolled out in 2014.

So what does the launch of Datsun mean for the automaker’s business in India?

We believe it is all about brand positioning in India, whereby Datsun will target entry-level, first-time car buyers with models that are priced below INR 350,000 (or USD 7,000 at current exchange rates).

The launch of Datsun will also safeguard the brand equity of Nissan, which now will not have any vehicles below its current Micra hatchback. This then also allows Nissan to stay away from the so-called low-cost segment, thus preventing its brand dilution.

We expect the first Datsun models in India to be a value for money mini car (code I2) as well as the KAI K2 subcompact model.

We have further learned that these models will be developed on an all-new Nissan platform, which will most likely be shared with Renault as well.

Datsun’s new mini car will be competing against the Maruti Suzuki Alto and possibly top-end Tata Nano in India.  Meanwhile, KAI will be positioned just below the Nissan
Micra.
