Asean Automotive Monthly: Executive Summary (March, 2012)

Nissan’s Datsun Play In Indonesia.

Renault-Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn chose Indonesia to make his global announcement to revive the Datsun brand. This underscores the increasing importance of this Southeast Asia nation in Nissan’s Asean strategy. In addition to Indonesia, Datsun will also make a comeback in India and Russia.

As the world’s fourth most populous country and thanks to rising income levels, the potential for future growth is huge in Indonesia. What’s more telling is that first-time car buyers will be driving a majority of this future growth. And this is the market where Nissan will play its Datsun brand. New models under Datsun, which we believe to be a new mini car (code I2) and KAI K2 subcompact, are expected to roll out from Nissan’s West Java facility in the next couple of years.

In fact, Nissan is pouring in USD 400 million to prepare for the production start of these models, hiking up its plant capacity five-fold to 250,000 units per annum by 2014.

Nissan will also use Datsun to participate in the Indonesia government’s ‘green car project’. Details of the project are likely to come out in the next few months, and should include conditions on minimum investment, fuel-efficiency and carbon emissions requirements, high local sourcing and export targets.
