Expat Guide to Argentina: Health Care
Argentina was a rapidly growing country that had its growth stunted during the financial collapse and default from 2001-2002.
But even with that, the country is still one of the leaders in South America when it comes to health care.
In Argentina there are 3.2 practicing physicians per 1,000 citizens, which is slightly lower than Western European averages, but is higher than the UK, which has 2.7 practicing physicians per 1,000 citizens.
Part of the reason this is so is because Argentina still spends a large amount on health care; in fact, it spends 9.5 percent of its GDP on health care, which matches spending levels in Europe.
Health care is delivered through three different systems in the country: public, which is free to all as guaranteed under the Argentinian constitution, obras sociales, which are union-backed health insurance funds used for employees or staff groups and private, which covers nearly 2 million Argentines.
“Quality of care is particularly high in Buenos Aires, as exemplified by the strong growth in the health tourism industry.
But standards are lower elsewhere, and a lack of skilled nursing staff aggravates the problem outside the capital,” said Karen Teasdale, marketing operations manager for Axa PPP International.
