Brazil to Open Doors to Skilled Immigrants, Slam Shut to Others

Brazil’s rapid growth has led the country to become the world’s sixth largest economy, and as a result job growth has outpaced available skilled workers.

Recent studies indicate that there is a shortage of qualified professionals of between 200,000 and 400,000 people.

This demand is not only because of the growth of the oil, mining and information technology industry, but also due to preparations for the 2014 FIFA World Cup and 2016 Olympic Games.

Brazil has been drawing educated professionals from Europe as they leave their homeland in search of work abroad.

“They see Brazil as a land of great opportunities for growth and development, where there is demand for skilled labor.

Brazil needs engineers, scientists and technical personnel, and Brazil’s schools are unable to train enough professionals,” said Mauricio Santoro, a Brazilian political analyst with the independent Getulio Vargas Foundation.
