Expats Flock to India Seeking Jobs, Excitement

An increasing number of well-educated expatriates from wealthier and more developed countries have been coming to India in the past few years to take advantage of new opportunities in a quickly transforming economy.

They are coming both for jobs and for adventure, embracing a new culture and leaving behind their own sluggish economies.

Nearly twice as many visas were granted to Americans in 2010 compared to 2009—47,929 versus 23,085—and this does not include Americans of Indian origin who apply for different visa types.

For Beijing there was a 51 percent increase for the same period, 48 percent for Germany, and 41 percent increase for Paris. Dr. Soumya Kanti Ghosh of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry says a strong economy and continued foreign investment is fueling the trend.

The media industry is a particularly strong area for expatriates in India, as media organizations are growing rapidly and encouraging U.S. college graduates to come work there.

‘‘There’s really been a sense of limitless horizons,” said Rodrigo Davies, online editor for GQ in Mumbai.

“There’s very little to restrain you.”

He formerly worked in London, where he said there is plenty of innovation, but “the number of businesses, publications opening there is a fraction of what’s opening here.”

It is not clear that the trend will continue, as the economy’s expansion is slowing and some new visa rules may make it more difficult for foreign workers.
