Germany Plans to Attract More Foreign Skilled Workers

In order to battle a major skills shortage, the German government has drafted a joint action plan that will allow skilled workers that meet certain criteria to enter the country without a work contract.

Officials hope the plan will be a good incentive for foreign students studying at German universities to stay and work in the country after graduation.

The minimum income threshold for permanent residency will be lowered from €66,000 to €48,000 per year, and the goal is to make it more convenient for foreign workers to get residency permits and to make them feel more welcome in Germany.

"More and more German citizens become increasingly aware of the fact that immigration of alien talents into Germany bears positive effects on the country," according to the report, written by an expert commission led by former North Rhine-Westphalia Integration Minister Armin Laschet and former Defense Minister Peter Struck.
