How Chinese View Working With Americans

The book "When We Are the Foreigners" details authors Orlando Kelm, John Doggett, and Haiping Tang's attempts to understand the Chinese perspective about working with American colleagues.

Kelm, from the University of Texas' Center for International Business Education and Research, hopes that the book will help some companies avoid the traps that have entangled other firms, especially as U.S.-Chinese relations enter a new phase of maturity.

"Our perception is the world is the foreigner and Americans are the local guys, and even when we're in another country we still think of the local guys as the foreigners," Kelm notes.

Other observations the authors point to is less individualism among the Chinese compared to Americans.

Chinese have a tendency to define themselves in the context of close relationships, and something like displaying outward appreciation for an employee can lead to a serious misinterpretation.

Unlike Americans, Chinese tend to skirt confrontation and take a roundabout approach to addressing intra-office problems to avoid shaming co-workers, especially higher-ups.

Many foreigners also mistakenly assume that growing English proficiency in China will reduce communication problems, but non-native speakers sometimes miss the English language's subtleties.

Learning Chinese or having a trusted associate that is fluent in the language can be invaluable in gaining important information and comprehending what employees are attempting to say.
