Brazil Job Market Continues to Impress

Brazil’s job market is booming, with the Labor Ministry reporting that 280,799 jobs were created last month compared to forecasts of 206,000.

The hiring spree includes many more foreign workers as well, with companies hiring 56,006 workers in 2010—a 30 percent increase over 2009.

Fueling the trend is higher foreign investment in Brazil, particularly at industrial factories and oil and gas companies, says Paulo Sergio Almeida, the Labor Minister’s General Coordinator for Immigrant Workers.

“The acquisition of new equipment and technology from abroad demands that you bring in professionals specialized in supervising the building and execution of the most sensitive steps in the process of setting up this equipment in order for a decent transfer of technology to happen,” he says.

A report from the Applied Economic Research Institute forecasts that through 2020, the sectors with the largest job growth will be petroleum and gas, at about 15.9 percent, followed by mining at 10.1 percent and public administration and education at 10.3 percent.

For specific jobs, the report forecasts that biotechnology will grow by 35.5 percent, followed by precision metrology at 27.2 percent and geologists/geophysicists at 43.1 percent.
