Japan: Immigration control plan calls for hiring more foreigners

Facing an aging workforce and declining birthrate, Japan is considering new immigration policies that would make it easier for expatriates to work and live in the country. In addition to accepting more foreign workers in specialized and technical fields, under the new plan Japan would also extend the length of visas for such workers as well as relax requirements for obtaining permanent residency.

The proposal also calls for allowing more foreigners to work in non-specialized fields. "In the midst of the ongoing globalization, the idea that everything in Japan should be done by Japanese can no longer stand," said Japanese Business Federation Chairman Hiroshi Okuda.
