Hungary: Labour market risk

Since Hungary passed a new law permitting foreigners to work in the country for three months at a time starting in 2002, an estimated 30,000 to 40,000 expatriates have landed jobs in Hungary, according to the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Transport.

The number of foreigners securing work permits has been steadily rising and is expected to continue to rise now that Hungary is part of the European Union. Hungary-based employers wishing to hire foreigners must apply to the local county Labor Center for work permits.

The application must be accompanied by several documents, including a medical certification, list of credentials, and a transfer agreement between the expatriate's foreign employer and the Hungarian employer.

The work permit requirement for expatriates does not come with any general exemptions, and employers caught with illegal foreign workers are subject to steep fines. Foreigners who wish to continue living and working in Hungary beyond three months must apply for a residence permit.
