Beijing strikes a blow against trademark infringers

Beginning before Christmas, signs were placed prominently in the most notorious knock off” markets in Beijing, warning vendors that it is an offence to traffic in fake products bearing certain trademarks.

Among the listed trademarks were those associated with Louis Vuitton, Burberry, Fendi, Prada, Chanel and Givenchy. Related Chinese language trademarks were also identified. Vendors caught trafficking in these goods are subject to investigation by the Public Security Bureau and possible punishment.

Market owners are also subject to punishment if they allow counterfeit products to be sold by vendors.

For those who have not been to Beijing recently, the world famous Silk Alley, a counterfeit shoppers paradise and a major attraction for foreign tourists, is now just a distant memory having been razed and replaced by a gleaming new indoor shopping mall.
