Malaysia to take in labour from all countries for all sectors

Malaysia's Cabinet Committee on Foreign Workers has announced that employers can now hire foreign workers from any source country to work in any sector following a crackdown on illegal foreign employment.

To ease a labor shortage in several industries, workers will now be permitted from new source countries, including India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Vietnam. A requirement that Indonesian workers take induction courses prior to employment has been dropped, and fast-track recruitment of Indonesians who had left Malaysia under an amnesty program will be expanded to include other Indonesians as well.

Previously, employment of foreigners had been limited by sector and country of origin. Currently, there are about 1.5 million foreigners registered to work in Malaysia, but that number could reach 2 million by the middle of the year, according to committee chairman Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, who says that a technical committee has been established to determine the actual need for foreign workers by industry.
