RMs can help thwart kidnappers

While kidnappings and hostage situations have been well covered by media outlets since the start of the war in Iraq, several countries have been hotbeds of kidnappings, including Colombia.

About 15,000 incidents occur annually across the globe, and these statistics can leave many workers paralyzed with fear if they have to travel abroad for company business.

Many employees are concerned about their own safety, what their firm will do if they are kidnapped, and who will take care of their families if they are killed or detained indefinitely. Risk managers can play a key role in employee safety abroad by providing workers with the latest information about security threats, how kidnappings occur, what can be done to prevent and mitigate the effects of kidnappings and extortion, and whether kidnap and ransom (K&R) insurance is available to cover family counseling and other needs.

K&R policies will cover ransom payments, personal financial losses, security services, and counseling for employees and families. Risk managers can lead the way in protecting workers abroad through careful planning and expert advice from security personnel, terrorism experts, government information, and other resources.
