China's car sales up 17.41% in Jan-May period

China's auto industry remains an overall fast growth this year. Passenger car sales, which accounts for more than 70% of the total car sales in the nation, rose 17.41% year on year in the first five months.

China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) said on Friday that passenger car sales reached 3.02 million units in Jan-May period, including 2.23 million sedans, 179,200 sport utility vehicles (SUVs) and 93,200 multi utility vehicles (MUVs), which booked an annual sales increment of 17.43%, 39.72% and 4.01% respectively.

From January to May, the top five best selling car brands are Santana, Jetta, Excelle, Corolla and Camry. Sales of home-grown Chinese car bands amounted to 560,700 units, comprising 25.1% of total sales with QQ, Xiali and F3 ranked the first three positions.

Market demand in May declined slightly from April. A total of 564,600 passenger cars were sold last month, down 6.66% from the previous month, but up 15.59% compared with the same period last year, according to CAAM.
