World Intellectual Property Organization develops Chinese-English translation tool

The World Intellectual Property Organization has reportedly upgraded its technology, creating an intelligent automatic translation tool which can better help people read patent applications from China.

It's said to be an upgraded version of "WIPO Translate," which can reportedly adjust the word order to make the translation results more like English.

WIPO Director General Francis Gurry says the Chinese-English translation tool was developed first, ahead of other source languages, because patent applications from China have been growing rapidly.

"Fourteen percent last year of international patent applications were found from China. We expect that to go this year to about 17 or 18, or even higher percent, and the trend will continue. Given the relative inaccessibility of the Chinese language, for non-Chinese persons, it is very important that we make available Chinese technologies through the patent system and through this new technology."

China was the source of more than 25-thousand patent applications to the World Intellectual Property Organization in 2014.

By next year, its expected China will rank 2nd in the world in patent applications behind only the United States, surpassing Japan.
